Simulating what cannot be simulated

چکیده

The background to these notes is the expectation that mathematical modelling and simulation is going to play increasingly important role in the understanding of the organization and control of genetic-, metabolic-, and signalling pathways. I am going to argue that for modelling and simulation to help our understanding of cellular dynamics, the current practice of experimental design has to change away from a ‘mining’ approach towards a signaland systems-oriented methodologies. The emergence of systems biology has therefore as much to do with the development of new techniques as it is relying on a new ‘way of thinking’ about cellular systems. This argument leads us to the fact that there exist a principal limit (or uncertainty principle) to what we can achieve in simulation and with the machine metaphor in particular. Amongst the many modelling paradigms suggested for cellular systems, it is clear that none is accurate and yet general. I am therefore to discuss a conceptual framework that generalizes a number of models (including Bayes nets, state-space models, Boolean networks) and should allow us to discuss the previous issues in a formal framework.

Integration of artificial neural network and geographic information system applications in simulating groundwater quality

Background: Although experiments on water quality are time consuming and expensive, models are often employed as supplement to simulate water quality. Artificial neural network (ANN) is an efficient tool in hydrologic studies, yet it cannot predetermine its results in the forms of maps and geo-referenced data. Methods: In this study, ANN was applied to simulate groundwater quality ...

Simulating Past Dynamics and Assessing Current Status of Markhoz Goat Population on Its Habitat

This study was conducted to collect comprehensive identification about Markhoz goat population and to simulate past dynamics of the population under its living conditions.Census data of the population size and the required parametersfor the simulation modelwere obtained frompublished data or were collected in its habitat in the last 3 years. In this study, past population dynamics and expected ...

Simulating green tax effects on pollution reduction, mortality and morbidity costs in Iran

The direct association between air pollution and morbidity and mortality rates has been proved. This major environmental risk factor has been mainly due to extensive use of fossil fuels. Increasing pollution caused by fossil fuels can threaten human health. This study simulated the effect of green taxes on Iran’s health indicators, i.e., mortality and morbidity. We used a Computable General Equ...

Experimental Errors in QSAR Modeling Sets: What We Can Do and What We Cannot Do

Numerous chemical data sets have become available for quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) modeling studies. However, the quality of different data sources may be different based on the nature of experimental protocols. Therefore, potential experimental errors in the modeling sets may lead to the development of poor QSAR models and further affect the predictions of new compounds....
